The other day as Roxy and I took her evening constitution, I heard an odd loud clacking noise behind me. I turned around and about twenty feet away, I could see five little birds hopping and jumping with great excitement around what appeared to be a struggling insect.
The birds took turns pecking at it, but the large insect put up some struggle and the furious beating of its wings was making the sound I heard. Its’ flapping wings made it turn and roll around which was one hell of a moving target for the frustrated birds. As law school took its toll on my eyesight, I couldn’t identify what type of insect was making such a racket from where I was standing.
Any second I expected the noise to end as the birds pounced and pecked at the well outnumbered creature. This went on for a minute or two, but after a bit, the birds gave up one by one and flew away. Eventually, it was down to the bug and one tenacious bird.
Roxy tugged on her leash, far less interested in the wild life show than I was. I turned to move on and heard something in flight coming up behind me.
The biggest cicada I have seen in my life flew past my shoulder and up into the nearest tree and started singing. I couldn’t believe it got away! Talk about resilience and not giving up?
The next time you think you are surrounded by unpleasant people or tasks, or think you are ready to just give up your dream or high hopes, remember this story, put a smile on your face and carry on.
