Every year Memorial Day touches my heart in a way few other holidays do. Both of my brothers served in the United States Military and after their service both returned home. My family and I will always be grateful for that.
One brother served on a Navy warship in the late 70’s – early 80’s in the Pacific Rim. He was a boiler mechanic who would, many years later, build a successful heating and air conditioning business servicing large grocery chains and their commercial refrigerators.
My other brother joined the Army right out of high school in 1988 and served until 1991. I will never forget in 1990 collapsing to the floor in my home, holding my infant son in my arms, when I heard he was being deployed to conduct sweeps on the front in Desert Storm. Being near lands infected with Agent Orange brought more fear into our hearts until he was home safe.
Please remember all the men and women, our Veterans of yesteryear, and all those who today work tirelessly for the freedom we all love and share.
