This article provides some interesting tips for higher-earning woman spouses. In the last ten years of my divorce practice, I have seen more and more woman having to pay alimony, sometimes for years, to their ex-spouse. Women who have been the major or only breadwinner for their family over the years are stunned when realize they might have an alimony obligation.
I have found that most people understand the concept of a “stay-at-home mom” or that the wife earned less money than the husband because she lost time to the workplace because of her primary obligation as mom and home manager. That concept, however, doesn’t translate over to men who were stay-at-home dads, or perhaps underemployed or chronically unemployed.
When evaluating the difficult question of whether to get divorced, this is a very important consideration for women who work outside the home as well and do well financially.
